The American Rope Horse Futurity Association’s Futurity and Sweepstakes, held April 17-20 at the Wildfire Arena in Salado, Texas, featured $45,000 in added money.
Platinum sponsor Bloomer Trailers hosted the event at its home facility and welcomed the exhibitors each evening to some Southern hospitality. The calf roping and team roping Futurity and Sweepstakes, managed by Jay and Lindsay Wadhams, offered classes for junior horses, senior horses and non-pro exhibitors over the four-day event, as well as an AQHA-approved special event.
Champions in the Futurity, for horses 5 and under, and Sweepstakes, for horses 6 and older, were presented with Gist trophy buckles. The Limited division winners received prints from Western Horseman magazine.
Futurity Open classes
The Calf Roping Futurity was won by Play Dual Rey, a 2003 stallion shown by C.R. Bradley for owner Casey Hinton, Whitesboro, Texas. Play Dual Ray (Dual Rey x Hiccup N Play x Doc’s Hickory) earned $2,500 for the Futurity win, along with go-round money of $600.
Petes Ginin Cowboy (OSU Pistol Pete x Sugars Gin Fizz x Ima Son O Sugar), a 4-year-old gelding, was shown by Doug Clark to second in the Futurity and won the Limited Calf Roping Futurity for owner Carl McBeath, Benton, La. He earned $1,500 for Reserve, plus go-round money totaling $900 in the Futurity, and $600 for the Limited win, plus an additional $250 in the go-rounds.
The Heading Futurity title went to Pepstaylormadepistol, shown by J.D. Yates for Phillip and Jo Gessert, Acton, Calif. He picked up a $2,700 paycheck for the win, in addition to $1,450 in go-round money. Peptostaylormadepistol (Taylormade Texas x Passovers Pearl x Passover Peppy) is a 4-year-old gelding.
The Limited Heading Futurity Championship went to the 2003 stallion Mr Sunolena Letters (Mr Sun O Lena x Many Letters x Capitol Letters), shown by Ned Kiehne for Jarrett Smith, Las Cruces, N.M. He earned $600 for the win, plus $500 in go-round earnings.
The Heeling Futurity was won by Chipolas Real Smoke (Chipola Doc Ware x Real Smoke x Gun Smokes Pistol), ridden by Steve Orth for Mike Row, Tishomingo, Okla. The event paid $3,250 to win and Chipolas Real Smoke, a 2004 mare, also earned $1,425 in go-round money.
BT Shining Treasure (Shining Spark x Tivitos Treasure x Docs Tivito) was shown by Walter Donnell to win the Limited Heeling Futurity. Lynn and Michelle Everts, Snook, Texas, own the 2003 stallion. He won $1,050 for the win, plus $600 in go-round money.
Sweepstakes results
Little Trona Lena (Little Trona x Miss Bueno Lena x Lena’s Bonita) was shown by James Barton for Robby Barton, Stephenville, Texas, to win the Calf Roping Sweepstakes and $2,000. He also earned $900 in go-round money. Little Trona Lena and Barton also won the Limited division, adding $800 to the 7-year-old gelding’s earnings.
The Sweepstakes Heading was won by Paybacks Are Double (Lean With Me x Quilchina Iris x Quilchina Bar), shown by Les Oswald. Michael Brandon, San Francisco, Calif., owns the 8-year-old gelding. The win paid $3,000, in addition to $1,250 in go-round money. Rank Of Colonel (Docen Colonel x Robin Taris Candi x Robin Tari), a 1996 gelding owned by Rob Smith, Corrales, N.M., was ridden by Ned Kiehne to win the Limited Heading Sweepstakes and $1,100 for the win and go-round money.
The Sweepstakes Heeling title went to Uno Cheetah, a 2002 mare shown by Jory Levy and owned by Clay and Colleen Logan, Strawn, Texas. Uno Cheetah (Smart Little Uno x Pretty Kitty Cheetah x Dual Pep) earned $3,300 in the win, plus $800 in go-round money. Colonel Buffalo (Les Glos Colonel x Hueros Ms Red Star x Skipa Red Star), a 1996 gelding, was shown by Trey Cruz to win the Limited Heeling Sweepstakes and $1,200 for owner Rosemary Harrison, Houston, Texas.
Non-Pro Sweepstakes
Ryan Schroeder and Cant Skippa Blaze (Blazing Hot x Smooth Lil Star x Skipa Star) returned to the winner’s circle in the Non Pro Calf Roping Sweepstakes, earning $1,550 for winning all three rounds and the average. Schroeder, Gainesville, Texas, also took the Limited division title, earning another $600 on the 10-year-old gelding.
The Non-Pro Breakaway was won by Darcy Clark, Wayne, Okla., on her 12-year-old Shining Smokin Spark (Shining Spark x Cindy Mambo x My Leo Mambo). Darcy earned $800 for the win, plus $400 in go-round money, and also won the Limited Division that added another $400 to her total.
Garth Gardiner and Miss Jewel Cool (Jewel Dun It x Miss Cool Coy x King Coys Bonanza) won the Non-Pro Heading Sweepstakes. The futurity win paid $2,500 and Gardiner earned another $125 in the short go. Gardiner, Ashland, Kan., also won the Limited division and another $1,000 on the 1998 mare.
Mike Row showed John Row’s 1995 stallion, Apache Blue Boy (Blue Boy Doc x Apache King Miss x Boston Apache), to win the Non-Pro Heeling Sweepstakes and $2,425, plus $900 in go-round earnings. Trey Alcorn showed 6-year-old stallion Ticket To Starfire (With All Probability x Twinkle Of Starfire x Ashes In The Fire) to win the Limited division Non-Pro Heeling and $800, plus $700 in go-round money.
